Los Angeles and Others Honor 30th Anniversary of The Karate Kid 1984 Movie

On December 5, 2014, Los Angeles honored the 30th Anniversary of The Karate Kid 1984 movie to mark the 30th Anniversary (June 22, 2014) of its release. Director John Avildsen and a few cast members received a resolution from Councilman Mitchell Englander during a City Council meeting in Van Nuys, CA.

The Karate Kid 1984 movie was filmed in LA’s San Fernando Valley. Some of the scenes were filmed at the Chatsworth Nature Preserve and at Cal State Northridge.

Councilman Mitchell Englander says the film had a limited budget and no big-name stars when it came out in June 1984 but became an instant classic . It is still very popular today.

Plot: Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is a high school senior, who moves with his mother Lucille (Randee Heller) from Newark, New Jersey to Reseda, California, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. The apartment’s houses handyman is an eccentric, but kind and humble Okinawan immigrant named Mr. Kesuke Miyagi (Pat Morita).

Daniel meets and befriends Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), an attractive high school cheerleader. Their friendship draws the attentions of Ali’s arrogant ex-boyfriend, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), a skilled practitioner of “Cobra Kai”, a form of karate who’s instructor is unethical and vicious. Johnny and his gang of Cobra Kai students continually torment Daniel, savagely beating him until Mr. Miyagi intervenes and single-handedly defeats the five attackers. Daniel is amazed at Mr. Miyagi skills and he asks Mr. Miyagi to teach him to fight. Mr. Miyagi refuses, but agrees to bring Daniel to the Cobra Kai dojo to resolve the conflict. They meet with the instructor, Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove), who is a ex-Special Forces Vietnam veteran who callously dismisses Mr. Miyagi’s peace offering. Mr. Miyagi then proposes to Sensei Kreese that Daniel enter the All-Valley Karate Tournament, where he can compete with Johnny and the other Cobra Kai students on equal terms. Mr. Miyagi requests that the bullying cease while he trains Daniel tand John Kreese agrees to the terms, but warns that if Daniel does not show up for the tournament, the harassment will resume and Mr. Miyagi himself become another target.
