Jackie Chan Stunt Team Reunion

Jackie Chan Stunt Team Reunion 2017

In 2017 the Jackie Chan Stunt Team had a televised reunion in Tianjin, China. The reunion took place on the Chinese variety show The Negotiator, where veteran members of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team spoke on video about the kindness and generosity shown them by the star over so many decades of working together. They then surprised him in person, coming on onstage. Needless to say, Jackie cried and so did most everyone else.

The following paragraph is Jackie Chan’s own words about the event taken from the diary he keeps on his website and the video of the show is below. Enjoy.

“When the JC Stunt team first started, I never imagined that we’d be together for over 40 years. In fact, I don’t think anyone would have thought that the JC Stunt team is now down to the 8th/9th generation. Before the event started, my friend Eric Tsang said to me, “don’t forget to bring some tissues”. I said to him, I won’t cry again tonight. I remember last time I cried a lot on the TV program and my wife already reminded me not to cry all the time because I look terrible when I cry on TV. But when I arrived at the event and saw so many Stunt team members and their family come especially for this gathering, and then watching scenes where the JC Stunt team put their lives on the line to complete, seeing our young faces now all aged with white hair, the energy and enthusiasm of the younger generation, and then seeing images of my five brothers that have left us already 冯克安,周润坚、韩春、岑潜波、薛春炜…. I seriously couldn’t hold back my tears (Actually, Eric Tsang cried more then me). I still have so many things I want to say to my brothers, but words just cannot fully describe all the things I want to say. I just hope the JC Stunt team will continue on for 50 years, 60 years, 70 years. Even if I’m not here, I hope the spirit of the JC Stunt team will continue to live forever! My brothers, meeting you in my lifetime is the best thing that has ever happened.”

About the Jackie Chan Stunt Team
When the JC Stunt team first started, I never imagined that we’d be together for over 40 years. In fact, I don’t think anyone would have thought that the JC Stunt team is now down to the 8th/9th generation. ~ Jackie Chan

The Jackie Chan Stunt Team or Sing Ga Ban, literally means “Chan’s Family Group” and his team truly functions as a family of stuntmen and martial artists who work side by side with Jackie Chan. The group is also known as Jackie Chan’s Stuntmen Association or the JC Stunt Team.

Established in 1976, the team was formed from individual’s Jackie Chan worked with in his early starring roles in Hong Kong action movies. As the co-stars and stuntmen hired by the film studios began working together they became familiar with one another’s skills and abilities and eventually they become a working team. Like Jackie Chan, some of the members had received training at the Peking Opera schools.

The stunt team had become an official organisation of 6 members in 1983 when Project A was released. The “team” on the film received the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography of 1985. The team members did not just work together, there were other benefits as well. Through the organisation, the stuntmen received insurance coverage, a monthly salary and higher pay. By the time Police Story 2 (1988) was released, the team had expanded to around 20 members. This organization as it functioned was disbanded in 1990 and it became the practice to use individual members on a film-by-film basis, rather than all members remaining on the payroll. This allowed for new members and for former members to return to the organization.

The formation of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team influenced others in the business to follow suit including co-stars Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. Other actors and stunt performers also formed their own stunt teams including Lau Kar-leung, Philip Ko, Stanley Tong and Bruce Law. At times the Jackie Chan Stunt Team worked with Sammo Hung’s team on films including Thunderbolt (1995) and Around the World in 80 Days (2004). There have been a small number of films that Jackie Chan produced but did not have a role in or where he was not involved, but the films were able to utilize his stunt team. These films include The Gold Hunters (1981), Rouge (1988), The Inspector Wears Skirts 2 (1989), Stage Door Johnny (1990) and Angry Ranger (1991).
